LEICESTER Lion Cubs have moved to sign Calum Mitchell as a replacement for the retired Sonny Springer.
23-year-old Mitchell comes from a successful background in motocross and has been competing in his first speedway season with his local club King’s Lynn in the National Development Trophy.
He has achieved a creditable four-point average in that competition for the title-winning Young Stars, where he has been a team-mate of Lion Cubs regulars Cooper Rushen and Max Perry.
Team manager Jen Crossland said: “Our 28-day facility for Sonny was due to expire before our next meeting so we needed to make a move, and we’re pleased to welcome Calum to the club.
“We discussed it with the other riders in the team, especially those who have seen him ride regularly, and we know he’s been improving nicely during his first season.
“He was keen for more meetings and this level is all about bringing riders on, so we look forward to having him with us.”
Mitchell will make his Lion Cubs debut in their next WSRA National Development League meeting at home to Middlesbrough on Sunday August 24.
